How to Start Small and Expand Your Custom Closet Later

You don't have to do it all at once. Here's how to start with one great component and build your dream closet over time — with a plan that actually works.

By Comfort Concepts QCA Design Team — Quad Cities custom storage specialists since 1989

One of the most common things we hear at Comfort Concepts QCA is: "I want to do the whole closet, but I can't do it all at once."

Good news: you don't have to.

Start with Your Biggest Pain Point

Every closet has one thing that bothers you most. For some people it's shoes piled everywhere. For others it's the lack of drawer storage, or the fact that half their wardrobe lives in suitcases. Start there.

A single drawer tower, a shoe rack section, or a double-hang rod addition can transform your experience immediately — and cost a fraction of a full project.

Design for Growth

The key is designing with expansion in mind from the very beginning. When we create your initial design, we plan where future components will go, how they'll connect, and what the finished project will eventually look like. That way, when you're ready to add more, everything fits together seamlessly.

A Typical "Start Small" Plan

Phase 1: Install a double-hang section and shoe shelving ($600–$1,000)

Phase 2: Add a drawer tower and accessory storage ($500–$800)

Phase 3: Complete the upper shelving, lighting, and accent pieces ($400–$700)

Total investment spread over time: what might feel like a big number becomes very manageable.

We Plan the Whole Thing, Build Part of It

We'll design your full closet from the start, give you a complete plan, and then build just Phase 1. When you're ready for Phase 2, we come back. The design is already done — there's no extra cost to adding on later.
