History
The Story of Geneseo
Geneseo was settled in 1836 by a group of 56 pioneers from Geneseo, New York, who named their new Illinois home after their hometown. The city became the historic center and grew as a prosperous agricultural and commercial center. Its historic downtown — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — features remarkably preserved 19th-century commercial architecture. Geneseo was also the home of Camp Grant, a famous training facility used during World War I, and maintains a strong civic pride rooted in its long, distinguished history.
