The Story of Davenport
Davenport was founded in 1836 and named after Colonel George Davenport, an early settler and trader. It quickly became a major Mississippi River port city. In 1856, it became the eastern terminus of the first railroad bridge to cross the Mississippi River — a project defended in court by a young attorney named Abraham Lincoln. The city grew as a manufacturing and river trade hub throughout the late 1800s, and today stands as the largest city in the Quad Cities metro area.
